One of the most common questions people have when they are recovering from an injury, ailment, or surgery, is "Do I need rehabilitation therapy?” In Mississauga, there are many rehabilitation clinics that are dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of their patients. Often times, a wellness centre may employ several doctors or people with expertise in multiple disciplines, so reasoning for visiting your local wellness centre may vary from person to person. The goal of rehabilitation therapy is to improve function in some way and reduce pain, in order for patients to return to their daily hobbies and activities. Goals for each individual patient may be different. An older person who is recovering may simply want to regain their independence by being able to bathe or dress without assistance, whereas a younger person recovering from a sports injury may be hoping to be able to play again or return to work pain-free. No matter the issue, rehabilitation therapy aims at returning their patients to the best possible physical form by providing evaluation and treatment during the recovery process.

Rehabilitation therapy focuses on four main areas:
  1. Physical Therapy
  2. Occupational Therapy
  3. Speech Therapy
  4. Treating & Managing Pain

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is aimed at helping to improve one’s strength, mobility, and fitness. It provides evaluation and treatment to help restore function, improve range of motion, flexibility, and balance. People of all ages and fitness levels undergo physical therapy as a way to help them overcome their challenges and regain their independence. Many people undergo physical therapy after surgery to help prevent future injury.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is focused on helping patients return to completing their daily activities or possibly returning to work. Occupational therapists help patients restore the coordination, strength, and mobility to perform normal activities present in our daily living and working environments. Occupational training also helps with visual perceptual activities, cognitive retraining, and hand therapy.

Speech Therapy

Sometimes people recovering from strokes, brain injuries, or other ailments have difficulty communicating or swallowing. Speech therapy aims to help patients improve communication, swallowing, vital stimulation, and cognitive recovery from brain injury or stroke. It helps patients improve their language comprehension, expression, cognition, voice, fluency, and swallowing.

Treating & Managing Pain

One of the most common reasons for undergoing rehabilitation therapy in Mississauga is treating and managing pain. People suffer a number of different injuries while playing sports or at work. Rehabilitation can help with all sorts of sports injuries, fractures, back injuries, arthritis and even carpal tunnel syndrome. Essentially, any problem that causes pain or limitations can be treated by a physical therapist. If you feel that you may need physical therapy, consult your doctor. Rehabilitation therapy is a terrific resource for those recovering from all sorts of health issues. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy sessions help patients overcome the challenges they face in the recovery process, helping to improve their overall quality of life. Don’t let your physical limitations hold you back, start rehabilitation therapy and feel better today.
