Physical Therapy

If you are recovering, rehabilitating, or learning to manage an injury or ailment, physical therapy exercises can help you regain your strength, balance, range of motion, and joint control. Physical therapy can also help with muscle re-training. The goal of physical therapy is to allow people to heal or better manage their ailments, helping them move better, relieve pain, and improving their overall physical function and fitness level. It is designed to make daily activities and tasks easier or more bearable. If you or a loved has suffered from an injury or illness that has caused the impairment or loss of function, a physical therapist can help.

What to Expect

Physical therapists use a number of different techniques, stretches, and exercises to help their patient’s return to good health. These techniques may be used to help decrease pain and stiffness or to improve some aspect of their quality of life. Perhaps the most undervalued part of physical therapy is patient education. A physical therapist can help patient’s understand the challenges they are being faced with as a result of their prevailing injury or ailment. Educating patients’ on their condition or illness is a fundamental part of physical therapy and a physical therapist may use a myriad of tools such as charts, diagrams, or models to help a patient understand their diagnosis and prognosis.

During physical therapy, physical therapists use a range of physical agents and manual techniques to facilitate the healing or strengthening process.  Heat, ice, electrical stimulation, or ultrasounds may be used as treatments during physical therapy. Therapeutic exercises are often used to help people gain range of motion, increase strength, and improve their overall physical function. Physical therapists work closely with patients, doctors, and family members to ensure safe return to maximum physical function.

For patients with chronic back pain, physical therapy can also help. Sometimes physical therapy can be prescribed even if no apparent injury has taken place. Physical therapy can help improve posture, reducing the stress and symptoms associated with back pain. Rather than waiting for a magical cure or for your pain to disappear on its own, physical therapy takes a progressive approach to help patients heal and return to good physical form.

Live Healthier

Your physical therapist may also recommend that you refrain from doing certain activities that may aggravate your condition. For example, if you have a bad back, you may be recommended to stay away from activities that require repetitive bending. Sometimes, there are ways to accommodate your physical ailments and still do these activities. Gardening is one of many activities that requires a lot of bending, however, raised garden beds can help senior citizens or people with back issues to continue gardening without the physical demands normally required.

Completing physical therapy exercises even while at home is a great way to remain in top-notch physical form well after your physical therapy sessions have ended. More people are realizing the benefits and relief provided by physical therapy sessions. Whether recovering from an accident, ailment, or simply trying to correct issues which have been nagging at your well-being for a long time, physical therapy might be the answer you have been looking for.
