Toronto Philanthropic Projects

Philanthropists in Toronto have a lot of decisions to make – there are so many deserving charitable organizations in the Greater Toronto Area! These charities can be divided into several different categories: medical, animal, environmental, arts and culture, religious, educational, international, and social services, to name a few.

Medical and health donations are common. Many people leave a bequest or donate to their local hospital. Philanthropist Albert Gasparro, who is a Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre donor, explains why: "At some point in life everyone will require the service of their local hospital. If you are able help, you should.”

Other health-related causes include charities that target funds to help sufferers of, or researchers for a particular disease. This encompasses several "ride for” and "run for the cure” charities that organize events for athletes. People often leave donations in honour of loved ones and friends who have fought a particular disease, such as cancer, AIDS, diabetes, heart disease, etc. There are also charities that provide seriously ill children with toys or "wishes” such as trips to Disneyland.

Those in Need

Many organizations in Toronto exist to help those who are struggling financially or personally. The Daily Bread Food Bank, for example, provides food for about 800,000 client visits per year. The Salvation Army helps those who struggle, and works to help eradicate poverty. Covenant House gives street kids a safe place to stay, and provides food, clothing, and counseling. Scott Mission helps the needy with meals, daycare, clothing, and spiritual aid. Out of the Cold provides beds for homeless people during months when the cold can present a danger to health and life. Interval House is a shelter for women and children who are fleeing abusive relationships. FCJ Refugee Centre works for those whose immigration status makes them vulnerable. All of these organizations provide help to residents of the community who are in distress. You know that by donating to causes such as these that you'll be doing something to help your fellow Torontonians who are in need.

Animals, Arts, and More

A lot of people have compassion for the animals in our midst. Animal charities in Toronto abound; they include very many organizations that offer help to stray and feral cats, rescue organizations for various dog breeds, local humane societies, and blanket organizations such as the Canadian Wildlife Federation. There are many specialty non-profits as well, such as the foundation that trains guide dogs for the blind, or treatment centres for injured wildlife.

Arts and culture is another important sector for donors. Major institutions such as the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Ballet, the Toronto Symphony, the Canadian Opera Company, and the Royal Ontario Museum are some of the major institutions that donors support. Smaller arts groups depend on donations for their survival. These include arts projects like Sketch, an arts-based program for street and marginalized youth, or various independent galleries. Theatres like Soulpepper, Tarragon, Factory, Passe Muraille, and many more need donors in order to thrive.

And of course, there are charities that help all of us, such as the Toronto Public Library, which also gratefully accept donations. Albert Gasparro has this to say about the art of giving: "It's important for each of us to do our part to help humanity and our community.”
